Institute Mater Dei has a long history in giving formation to the young religious women of India and neighbouring countries since 1964. As we turn the log book of past years, we see that Institute Mater Dei was conceived in the fertile minds and hearts of Cardinal James R. Knox of revered memory the then Inter nuncio to India. Mother Theodosia A.C, the then Superior General of Apostolic Carmelite Sisters and the first President of the Conference of Religious Women, India worked together with Fr. Joseph Miranda SJ who was the Spiritual Advisor of CRWI for the realization of this cherished dream. What they envisioned was at the formation of Junior Sisters of various Congregations through a prayerful study of the Sacred Scriptures and the other related subjects that would enable our women religious to face the challenges of modern life and make their services not just efficient but effective in the Church and in the world around.
The four hundred-years old Augustinian monastery of Santa Monica, Old Goa, with its towering height, its massive walls adorned with 17thcentury paintings, its lengthy corridors, its flight of steep and wide stairs, its spacious rooms and halls, once infested with rats and reptiles, was to be transformed into a training ground, “Institute Mater Dei”.
Institute Mater Dei celebrated its golden Jubilee on 5th Jan. 2015.
For the past several years, a new life and thinking pattern have been emerging from here for the young sisters doing theological and philosophical studies together, without losing their own Congregational identity and they remain as daughters of the Church.
During this academic year varied attempts are made to promote the unity in the midst of diversity. Although we give emphasis on the motto of the Institute, “Grow unto fullness of Christ”,
