Academic year 2014-2015
15th - Jan 2019

On 28th June, 2014 Institute Mater Dei, Goa inaugurated the Golden Jubilee year as well as the academic year 2014-15.  The splendid inaugurations began with the Eucharistic celebration presided by Most Rev. Felipe Neri  Ferrao, Archbishop Patriarch of Goa and Daman.

Commenting on the significance of Jubilee the Archbishop said that it is an occasion to look back at  the journey of those 50 years,  also to look ahead towards the time to come, and to be truly fruitful to grow unto the fullness of Christ, thus to recommit ourselves to the vision and mission of the Institute.

The Archbishop in his inaugural address quoted from Pope Francis’ speech to the Union of Superiors of Women Religious. “He said that the Church grows through witness. The witness that can really attract is that associated with attitudes which are uncommon: generosity, detachment, sacrifice, self-forgetfulness in order to care for others. Religious should be women who are able to wake the world up. You should be real witnesses of a world of doing and acting differently. Religious life ought to promote growth in the Church by way of attraction.”In this sense Institute Mater Dei has an important role to guide the young women religious to become persons to wake up the world, to light up the world through their witnessing life.

Institute Mater Dei is the only Theological Centre administered by the Conference of Religious of India, Women wing. (CRWI). Institute Mater Dei, in Santa Monica was born, as a result of the felt need of the women religious to an invitation to bring about a much-needed renewal directed by the Second Vatican Council, to make religious life meaningful and relevant in the Church.  Started in 1964 in Santa Monica convent in Old Goa, this institute complex has a long history of cross-cultural encounter, the first of which was between the Portuguese and India.  Ever since 1964, Institute Mater Dei has given theological formation and training to more than 6000 women religious from India and the neighbouring Asian countries.

Sr. Pushpa Joseph FMM, president of IMD in her key note address emphatically pointed out that the Golden jubilee of IMD is a celebration of memory/ remembrance, of history, of continuity and perseverance, growth and possibilities. She further said that the religious women through their training empower themselves to face life reflectively and to find new alternatives, growth and possibilities, in their field of missionary endeavours.  They impart their knowledge to others by an attitude of intense commitment, aiming at social transformation also establishing relationships, thus become women who dare and involve into the lives of others. This is what history of Mater Dei reveals to us.

In this year of Jubilee Mater Dei is blessed with 126 students from India, belong to 55 Congregations and one student from abroad.  There are 83 sisters enrolled for one year certificate course in Theology, 25 sisters for Animation Programme for student Formators, 6 sisters and one young woman for one year philosophy course, 5 sisters and one woman for 1st year B.Th. degree course, 6 sisters for 3rd year degree B.Th. course.  There are also 12 sisters preparing themselves for B.Th.degree comprehensive exams which will be held in second week of July.
